Public Health

The Public Health Department at ICOH focuses on improving oral health outcomes across Africa through evidence-based interventions and community outreach programs. Led by Dr. Ukachi Chiwendu Nnawuihe, the department engages in public health surveys, policy development, and service delivery to vulnerable populations.

Key Programs

• Comprehensive School Oral Health Program: Promoting oral health education and preventive care in schools.
• Primary Oral Health Care Program: Providing essential oral health services at the primary care level.
• Vulnerable People Program: Offering dental services to orphans, the elderly, displaced persons, and those in correctional facilities.
• Dental Outreaches: Extending services to markets, religious centres, offices, and communities.
• National Oral Health Surveys/Surveillance: Conducting surveys to monitor oral health trends.
• Oral Health Data Bank: Establishing a national database for oral health information.
• Training Programs: Developing oral health education for healthcare professionals.
• Environmental/Occupational Safety Surveillance: Ensuring safety standards in dental practices.
• Oral Health Policy Development/Advocacy: Promoting policies to improve access to oral healthcare. 

Responsibilities

• Implementing and monitoring oral health programs for schools and communities.
• Conducting research and maintaining an oral health data bank.
• Offering professional training for oral health workers.
• Advocating for improved oral health policies and access to services.
• Ensuring safety standards in dental environments.

Enhancing and strengthening collaborative research and training efforts among WHO African Regional member countries, aligned with the WHO Oral Health Strategy for Regional Health Sector Reform.
