Basic Science and Research

The Basic Science and Research Department at the Intercountry Centre for Oral Health (ICOH) is dedicated to advancing the scientific understanding of oral health. Under the leadership of Ms. Arit E. Umoh, the department conducts cutting-edge research, develops training programs, and contributes to national oral health data resources, establishing ICOH as a centre of excellence in oral health research.
The Basic Science and Research Department leverages a wealth of knowledge and skills of a diverse team of professionals from various fields, including biochemistry, chemistry, microbiology, medical laboratory science, statistics, and other natural and life sciences, to advance oral health research, ensuring that ICOH remains at the forefront of scientific discovery. Through a multidisciplinary approach, the department integrates expertise from these various disciplines to foster innovative research and a comprehensive understanding of oral health. 

Key Responsibilities

• Research Activities: Conduct annual research to improve oral health care practices and policies.
• Publications: Publish peer-reviewed articles in reputable journals to contribute to global oral health knowledge.
• Training Programs: Offer specialized training to enhance research skills among dental professionals and students.
• National Oral Health Data Bank: Develop and maintain a national oral health data bank to support data-driven decisions.
• Collaborative Research: Engage in national and international collaborative research projects.
• Grant Writing & Funding: Secure research grants to support ongoing projects.
• Ethical Oversight: Ensure research compliance with ethical standards.
• Innovation & Technology: Integrate cutting-edge technology into research.
• Dissemination: Share research findings through conferences, workshops, and community outreach.
